Are Supplements The Key To Longevity?
The Truth Behind Your Daily Dose Of Omega-3
Omega-3s – the fatty acids found in certain fish, nuts and seeds – have long been lauded for their health benefits, from boosting brain function to reducing inflammation in the body. And now new research suggests the essential nutrient may also have the power to slow down the ageing process.
A major clinical trial, published in Nature Aging, explored whether certain interventions can extend humans’ healthspan, the period of your life which you spend healthy before declining in old age. The trial involved 777 participants aged over 70 from Switzerland, who were tracked across a three-year period.
And the results were indeed enlightening. Researchers found older people who took one gram of omega-3s every day had aged three months less than others on the trial, with the ageing rate determined using advanced biological tools called epigenetic clocks. Those who also exercised regularly and took vitamin D supplements showed even less signs of ageing.
With this in mind, a daily dose of fish oil could be what you need to bounce back this spring. Here’s everything you need to know about omega-3, plus how to seamlessly work the powerhouse ingredient into your diet.

Ask The Expert: Edward Van Harmelen
We ask Edward Van Harmelen, Founder of Youth & Earth, everything we need to know to longevity-driven supplements.
What are longevity supplements?
Actual ageing happens deep within our cells – that's precisely where the new wave of longevity supplements aims to work their magic.
Think of your body like a luxury car: it's not just about keeping the exterior polished but maintaining what's under the hood. Scientists have discovered that certain compounds can mimic the effects of healthy habits like exercise and calorie restriction at the cellular level. These 'lifestyle in a bottle' supplements support your body's natural repair processes, energy production, and cellular health.
How do they work?
Let's connect the dots between ageing science and supplementation. Today's advanced supplements work by targeting the key ageing processes we just discussed – like giving your body's natural maintenance systems an extra boost.
What’s one of the biggest misconceptions in the wellness space?
The goal isn't to stop ageing – it's to age better. As Dr. David Sinclair often emphasises, ageing should be viewed as a treatable condition we can influence, not an enemy to defeat. The focus should be supporting our body's natural maintenance systems, not fighting against time.
