Staying In
Read Cool Machine by Colson Whitehead
The third and final novel in Colson Whitehead’s Harlem Trilogy is on shelves today. The two-time Pulitzer Prize winner is best known for his novels The Underground Railroad (2016) and The Nickel Boys (2019), the latter of which was adapted into an Oscar-nominated film in 2024. Taking us back to ‘80s Harlem (after Harlem Shuffle’s ‘60s setting and Crook Manifesto’s ‘80s setting), Cool Machine centres on furniture shop owner Ray Carney who leads a double life as a part-time criminal fence – someone who buys and sells stolen goods. The changing New York City in all of its grit and glamour makes for a rich backdrop – perfect for some summer afternoon escapism. Out now.

Try Miami’s JETSET Pilates
Miami’s hottest reformer pilates studio has landed in London. Opening today in Shoreditch is JETSET Pilates, which has built up a cult following Stateside (with fans including the actress Sophie Turner) and is now planning a wider UK expansion. Founded by Tamara Galinsky, the brand is known for its 50-minute, music-led classes performed on custom-built reformers alongside pilates rings, resistance bands and light dumbbells. The sessions are notoriously challenging, but guests can learn the ropes at the JETSET Fundamentals class before progressing to the signature – or try targeted upper or lower body workouts. Prepare for this to become your new pilates obsession. jetsetpilates.co.uk
Property Of The Day
Though cosy cult classic Gilmore Girls was shot in Hollywood and set in Connecticut, its pilot episode was in fact filmed in the small Canadian town of Unionville, Ontario. And now the historic, clapboard home where Lorelai and Rory lived is for sale.
