Staying In

Read My Life With Wolves by Rick McIntyre

Add My Life With Wolves to your summer reading list. Wolves generally get a bad rap – the villain at the door in fairy tales, the eyes in the dark in Jack London; metaphors for everything we fear. Rick McIntyre has spent 10,000 dawns watching wolves through a spotting scope at Yellowstone. His retirement since 2018 has consisted of taking afternoons off to rewrite the script and show us how similar they are to us. My Life With Wolves is sold as his memoir, but he can’t keep the scope on himself for long – within a few chapters he’s back to recounting their stories of love, jealousy, courage and revenge. He ends with the wolf-hunter who put down his rifle after reading McIntyre’s books. Do the same, and when your dog whimpers in the night, you’ll know what it's dreaming. My Life With Wolves is out now (Greystone Books), review by Peter Phelps.

Going Out

Book A Trip To Glebe House’s New Cabins

Craving a foodie staycation? Book a stay at one of the new cabins at Devon’s Glebe House. Though Michelin recently announced that it would discontinue its Green Stars, few places felt more deserving of this accolade than this boutique hotel. Head chef and co-owner Hugo Guest’s restaurant uses produce, meats and fish from practically a grab away – including its own pork and beef reared on-site – in a superlative daily set menu. This uncompromising farm-to-fork ethos attracts weekend visitors from all over the country, put up in the main house’s cosy bedrooms. Its new cabins opened earlier this year and are total countryside idylls. They’re named the Crow’s Nests and situate you in privacy a moment from the house. The wooden cabins are charming: cheerfully-decorated with throws in sunny shades of orange and yellow, fresh-cut Sweet Williams vased on the table, and local art curated by its other owner, Olive Guest. Outside, bathtubs are sunken into the decking – you can watch the estate’s pheasants play from here – and the chatter of crows form your soundscape. glebehousedevon.co.uk
