Staying In
Give Your Home The Jane Austen Treatment
It is a truth universally acknowledged that modern homes are in want of Regency features. If you’ve tuned in to the BBC’s Jane Austen spin-off The Other Bennet Sister, chances are you’ve not only fallen in love (quite ardently, we might add) with the classic novel’s new heroine – but the ornate Regency interiors she frequents too. And while the world of Jane Austen (at least on screen) isn’t a new trend when it comes to interiors, we’re expecting it to be a major trend in 2026 thanks to a stream of Austen adaptations dropping throughout the year. ‘When I think of Jane Austen interiors, I imagine elegant yet comfortable Regency-style rooms in soft pinks, greens, and blues, layered with touches of romance through delicate, spriggy floral fabrics and wallpapers, frilled details, embellishments, and fringing,’ says interior designer Nina Campbell. ‘I can see Elizabeth Bennet pining after Mr Darcy on a beautifully carved wooden chair, or Mrs Bennet twitching a floral curtain at the window as she noses at Mr Bingley calling on her daughter.’ If this sounds like your kind of decor, read our guide to nailing Jane Austen interiors here.
Going Out
Eat At Whiteley’s Kitchen
London’s hottest reservation has landed – and to arrive at your table, you first get to wander through London’s swankiest new hotel, Six Senses at The Whiteley. Set in the Bayswater shopping centre turned luxury development, the hotel – the UK’s first Six Senses – is home to 109 rooms and suites and a signature subterranean spa, as well as its flagship restaurant Whiteley’s Kitchen. It’s hard to pin down this self-described ‘maverick’ restaurant. Glancing at its glam surroundings, you’d certainly expect something much fussier than you get. Instead you arrive at an open kitchen and larder, with hyperseasonal ingredients (informed by the Anglo-Celtic calendar) transformed into comforting dishes with occasional Pan Asian influences. Staff are ever-so-welcoming, even playful, encouraging another side dish here, an extra cocktail there. It suits a menu that can be described so, too: the bog-standard bread course is transformed into a dip and spread experience, with beetroot hummus and stracciatella on offer. Small plates include mussels, lamb koftas, crab-stuffed chicken wings and the decadently delicious cured black bream. And mains, here called ‘Stove Stories’, are approachable and generously filling. It’s comfortable, homely and totally without stiffness – the kind of place you’ll accidentally linger all evening long. whiteleyskitchenbarcafe.com
