Staying In

Watch Waiting for the Out

If the January blues make you want to curl up on the sofa, there’s a fresh new drama to binge on BBC iPlayer, led by rising star Josh Finan in his first leading role. Based on Andy West’s bestselling memoir The Life Inside and adapted by Dennis Kelly, Finan stars as Dan, a philosopher who begins teaching a class of men in prison, with topics like dominance, freedom and luck gaining new weight when filtered through the prisoners’ eyes. Keep an eye out for tomorrow’s newsletter too, where Finan will take us behind the scenes of the show. All episodes available to stream on BBC iPlayer

Going Out

Try One Of Junsei’s Late Night Listening Sessions

Another surefire way to brighten up a gloomy month is with great food and great music, and you can find both at Junsei, Aman Lakhiani’s yakitori restaurant and listening bar inspired by Tokyo’s izakayas. There’s a new slate of late night listening sessions to enjoy for a mellow dose of partying without the sore feet in the morning. Sample sake sourced from the snowy mountains of Japan or thoughtfully crafted cocktails like Heat (a Japanese twist on the spicy marg), Clear (Suntory Chita Whisky, passion fruit, cacao, citric) or Air (Suntory Haku Vodka, honeycomb, ginger, jasmine tea), with no-alcohol options available for Dry Janners. Accompany the body-bopping beats of leading London DJs with small bites like fried chicken with tartare mayonnaise, crab croquettes and chicken skin chips with togarashi salt and freshly flame grilled skewers flipped over the centuries old Binchō-tan. The wing, thigh with skin and aorta (be brave) are the tastiest. From 9.30pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at Junsei, junsei.co.uk

Property Of The Day

Once the summer retreat of former Prime Minister Lord Herbert Henry Asquith (that’s Helena Bonham Carter’s great-grandfather by the way), this Sandy Down home was used to rendezvous with his much younger lover. One thing about Asquith: he was bad at keeping a secret. Not only did he keep many records of his extra-marital affair in his letters but was prone to sharing classified WWI documents with his mistress. Shame the home’s secret tunnels hadn’t been built yet, or he would’ve had a spot to hide.
