February GBB

What's new this month from our Great British Brands

Dear Reader,

It has been a long, cold winter and I imagine many of us are hankering for a holiday – whether that’s to far flung (warmer) shores or a change of scene closer to home. With reports of swathes of the UK receiving zero minutes of sunshine for days and days on end, it’s no wonder we are dreaming of an escape route.

Happily, this crop of Great British Brands delivers exactly that – the chance to fantasise about toes in the sand on foreign shores, or even book that longed-for trip. Audley Travel and Elegant Resorts deliver tailor-made luxury travel where no two journeys are the same, while for an off-list, curiosity-kindling holiday look to Steppes and Cookson Adventures.

Or perhaps you long to take to the seas, on a luxury superyacht chartered by family-run Edmiston, or stepping back to the golden age of travel on Cunard’s legendary Queen Mary 2, slowing the pace on that bygone transatlantic odyssey or discovering the cruise line’s conscious and careful evolution onboard the new Queen Anne, this year sailing the sun-soaked Med and Canaries. Happy travels – whether that’s IRL or just your imagination.

See you in March, when I firmly hope spring will be showing up with all its promise.

Meher Waney of The Arts Club

  • Favourite British brand? Victoria Beckham. Her clothes have the best cuts – feminine but edgy.

  • Hero? The late Queen.

  • Weekend? Staying at my friend’s place in the Cotswolds, enjoying amazing locally grown organic produce and going horse riding.

  • Meal? I’m torn between the Sunday roast at The Hinds Head in Bray and the best pastrami sandwich from Paul Rothe & Sons, a family run delicatessen on Marylebone Lane.

  • Shop? Daylesford.

  • Undiscovered gem? Skehan’s pub in Nunhead – if you know, you know – with all my fabulous cousins in tow.

  • British idiosyncrasy? Being overly polite, and saying ‘apologies’ in the course of most conversations.

  • Band? Everything but the Girl. Tracey Thorn’s voice has been a soundtrack to my adult life.

  • Car? It has to be a Black Cab – especially as I don’t have a license.

  • Book? The Sherlock Holmes series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The Arts Club opened two new exhibitions on 13 February – celebrating the work of Frederick J Brown and Judith Godwin – which run until 25 May.
