Dear Reader,
We are well and truly into autumn, and nearly at the end of The Celebrity Traitors. If youâve got a taste for the decor as well as Claudiaâs outfits â Iâve just ordered myself a cape â check out Isabel Dempseyâs guide to castle-style decor.
Fermoie is one of my favourite decorating brands, and always has its finger on the pulse when it comes to sustainability. Find out more below. Our final House Guest podcast of this series is the Portuguese interior designer Barbara Neto. Tune in to hear about her new AI-driven vintage shopping platform Curiouz.
Have a great weekend,

As child-sized ghouls and ghosts take to the streets this evening, itâs clearer than ever weâre officially in the cold, dark depths of autumn. Retreating from the rain and wind, itâs more important than ever that our homes feel like a sanctuary from the outside world. Looking to give your home an autumnal refresh? Here are our top tips.
Fend Off The Dark With Pink Wallpapers
Just because the sky is moody, doesnât mean our walls need to be. With sunset hues trending this season, why not lick up some pink wallpaper? From pastel to eye-popping, hereâs our edit of the most beautiful options.
Cosy Up In Bed With A Statement Headboard
While you might already have loaded up your bed with the fluffy pillows, soft blankets and fresh linens this darker seasonâs long lie ins command, weâre looking further north of the mattress this season. A statement headboard can perfectly knit your bedscaping plans together, making the room feel fun, coordinated and (most importantly) completely your own. These are the designer headboards we are loving right now.
Embrace The Gloom With Traitors Style Interiors
If youâre anything like us, youâre currently waiting on tenterhooks for the Celebrity Traitors finale next week. But aside from the dramatic missions and nail-biting round table discussions, the showâs gorgeous Scottish setting is the real scene-stealer â and, more specifically, the castleâs grand interiors. Whether your dreams involve cosying up in the library with Hamlet in-hand like Stephen Fry or inspecting the castleâs enviable range of medieval armour, who wouldnât want to live within those impressive halls?
While the castle-inspired aesthetic has already enjoyed its time on the throne, The Traitors look has a more quintessentially Scottish feel: think medieval grandeur with a touch of countryside chic, plus plenty of tartan. Hereâs how to get the look.
Just as Farrow & Ball has become the by-word for quality paints, former owners Tom Helme and Martin Ephson were to keen to create a textiles brand with the same reputation. The answer? Fermoie. Founded more than 10 years ago, the brand earned a stellar reputation for its printing techniques and sustainable ethos. With the launch of its first wallpaper collection, we caught up with Fermoie co-founders Martin and Tom to find out more.
Talk me through the design process behind your new wallpaper collection.
Tom: Creating wallpaper was something our customers had been asking us to do for many, many years. But as artists and craftspeople, we werenât prepared to make a product that simply replicated or resembled our fabrics. We went back to first principles and designed our wallpaper to have the same depth, intricacy and mystique as our fabrics, and stand as a beautiful, desirable product in its own right.
Why is it important to your brand that all your products are made in-house?
Tom: Itâs what we have always enjoyed doing and, in a word, control! For us, itâs essential that we can oversee every stage of the creative and production process. Making everything in-house allows us to uphold the highest standards of quality, ensure absolute colour consistency and preserve the integrity of our designs. Itâs this hands-on approach that gives every Fermoie product its distinctive character and enduring appeal.
Tell us about the materials you use. What steps do you take to ensure theyâre sustainably sourced?
Martin: Fermoie represents the antithesis of âthrowaway cultureâ. All our cloth is made exclusively for us by suppliers weâve known and monitored for many years and are fully aligned with our values. Pure linen is woven to our studio teamâs specification from highly sustainable flax grown locally to the mill; our cottons, union cloths and linen sheers are produced in England. Our Indoor-Outdoor fabrics, which we launched in 2024, are woven in Lancashire from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles and made without PFCs, PFAS and other harmful âforever chemicalsâ.
Some of your fans were unsure youâd be able to bring your fabric designs to life as wallpapers. How did you overcome this?
Tom: Translating the colours and patterns of our fabrics into wallpaper with absolute clarity and fidelity was something many people believed was impossible. But through their extraordinary artistry, creativity and technical capabilities, our studio and production teams have done it. Perhaps most remarkably, their skilful use of tones and colours perfectly recreates the twill of our base cloth with its areas of light and shade, and the pigment overlay that, together, help to give our fabrics their sense of depth. Indeed, it is only by passing a hand over the paper that it becomes apparent the surface is flat, not woven.
How do you strike the balance between tradition and innovation in your designs?
Tom: Every Fermoie design still begins with the hand-drawn line. The full repeat pattern is meticulously created by hand, on paper, before itâs translated to screen engraving. Every colour is individually created, mixed and edited in-house according to our carefully considered palette and artistic principles. That part of our process is, indeed, entirely traditional. But as you correctly say, we have fully embraced modern technology, with our water-base inks, proprietary colour-mixing techniques and production process including a rotary screen printer we have specifically adapted to meet the unique technical and artistic demands of our Fermoie aesthetic.
What are your top tips for people looking for the right wallpaper for their home?
Martin: Itâs simple. Buy whatever speaks to you most clearly. All our products are designed to bring joy, warmth, colour and comfort to the home: whatever they choose will be right.
Oftentimes people are afraid to go bold with colourful, patterned designs. How would your convince them to take the leap?
Martin: I would say choosing Fermoie is the perfect way to overcome any misgivings and make the leap. All our designs and colourways are carefully edited to match, complement or contrast with each other perfectly. That means you can choose a single collection or any combination with complete confidence, knowing it will be aesthetically harmonious and look amazing!
Youâve recently become B-Corp accredited â why was this such an important step for you as a business, and what are your next steps?
Martin: B-Corp certification recognises our commitment to designing and making beautifully crafted products with inherent longevity, using responsible materials and considered manufacturing methods â a principle weâve upheld since we launched Fermoie in 2012. Weâve undertaken detailed work and achieved meaningful results right across our business, involving every member of our team; itâs wonderful to see their hard work and enthusiasm rewarded.âŻBy joining the global B-Corp community, we stand alongside businesses who share our belief that meaningful, long-term progress depends on collaboration and collective responsibility. No individual company or industry can solve the challenges of sustainability alone. Weâre proud to be part of this movement for positive change.
