September 2024 Interiors Newsletter

Dear Reader,

This month I’ve been thinking about the elusive elements that turn a house into a home. Anne Seibel, set designer for Emily in Paris gives an insight into how to achieve a French aesthetic, while we met ex-England rugby player Will Greenwood to discover how a kitchen transformation completed his Norfolk home. (Speaking of rugby, I interviewed Maro Itoje on the House Guest podcast. Listen here).

The design and decoration shows are kicking off – Decorex takes place 6-9 October, but first Focus/24 – which is in full swing until 20 September. I’ll be hosting an expert panel on adding the ‘je ne sais quoi’ to a room. I can’t promise a Netflix set design expert but we do have some fabulous guests including Paula Sutton of Hill House Vintage. Hope to see you there.

You’ll notice we travel all over for this newsletter. So: bon voyage and happy reading.

To Paris (and Norfolk and Surrey) & back

Martha Davies spoke to Emily in Paris’s set designer, Anne Seibel, on how to create an home with that certain Parisian touch… Tip: you first need to understand the architectural influences. Read the full interview here.

Ex-England Rugby player Will Greenwood made the move to the country a few years ago. He’s been slowly doing up his Norfolk home since. We took a peek into his kitchen.

It’s design season in London. We’ll be at Decorex (6-9 October) for a bit of trend-scoping and to meet new and old friends. But if you’re still looking for further inspiration? Here are the best upcoming art and decorative fairs, festivals and bonanzas to explore this autumn, according to Olivia Emily.

When a high-flying couple moved out to Surrey for a bit of additional space, they wanted to make sure they could host their city-folk friends in style. Interior designer Anouska Tamony tells C&TH how she made this dream happen.

And we’re back where we started. The Paris Grandma aesthetic is the latest interiors trend everyone is obsessed with. So, Martha Davies asks, what on earth is it?

If you’re still wondering what’s trendy… In January, we presented a report on the interiors trends set to shape the year. How right have we gotten it? These are 2024’s most important trends to get house beautiful.

Q&A with… Fermoie

There’s lots launching in the world of design right now – read our roundup here. But Fermoie has particularly caught out eye with its Marlborough and Ruffle collections – pretty new fabrics comprised of hand-drawn designs and produced in-house – and we’re enamoured.

Jamie Shawcross, director of the fabrics company, tells us a little about these sumptuous new launches:

‘These collections begin with a conversation... Our team exchange ideas, influences and inspirations. Then we move into drawing, creating colours, and studio trials to see how these designs work on different basecloths. The design evolves and takes on a life of its own: it’s that sense of discovery, serendipity and revelation that makes our work so enjoyable.

Marlborough draws from the early damasks and are a modern interpretation of large scale woven English textiles.

The design evokes the English rose garden... Celebrating the studio's love of intricate and reversible patterns with its delicate, intertwining floral and leaf motif.

Ruffle is a spin on familiar traditional weaves... Embodying the artistry and playfulness that defines Fermoie characteristics.

This new collection features... an intricate ruffle pattern – as its name suggests – to evoke a sense of three-dimensional movement through texture, depth and dimension.

The separate geometric shapes have been deftly abstracted... and blended together to form a flowing pattern in which a subtle check repeat is visible.’
