Summer Of Sport - Travel Newsletter - May 2024
Dear Reader,
Every four years when the Summer Olympic & Paralympic Games roll around, I find myself enamoured with the nichest of sports. In 2021, I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the new Surfing heats, and simply could not get enough of the colourful, boxy fashion on display at the Skateboarding. With Breakdancing making its debut at Paris 2024, perhaps my eyes will be drawn in a new direction.
But it’s not just Paris 2024 to look forward to: we’ve also got the Euros, and the annual joys of tennis, horse racing, cricket, rugby, cycling and so much more jam packed into this veritable summer of sport.
If you’re fervent to try your hand (or foot, or racket) at something new this season, you’re not alone. I recently got hooked on Padel during a trip to Spain’s Costa Blanca, unearthing fond memories of learning another new and sunny sport, volleyball, in PE in celebration of another Summer Olympics moons ago. But if a staycation is what the doctor ordered, we’ve got just what you need to scratch the itch, too.
Here are eight travel ideas celebrating our all-encompassing summer of sport.
Enjoy,
Celebrating A Summer Of Sport
1. Paris Olympics
With less than three months to go until the Paris Olympics 2024, the countdown is on – but it’s not too late to secure your spot. Don’t miss your chance to see the Olympic Games in style by booking a hospitality package through On Location. These give you access to some of the best seats and private boxes in the house, alongside a range of accommodation, fine dining and entertainment. Contact the team at [email protected] or 0208 157 6511 to discuss your options.
2. Get Set, and Go with PoB Hotels
Brush up on your favourite British sport or try a new one this summer with PoB Hotels. The premiere collection is showcasing the best of its properties’ sporting facilities and experiences this season: think cycling along a scenic track, sailing around our breathtaking coastline, or hitting the open moors on horseback. Olivia Emily got a taste of the action.
3. Anantara The Marker, Dublin
If Triathalon action has you ready to tick wild swimming off your bucketlist, hop over to Dublin’s Anantara The Marker, for a cold but exhilarating experience whilst surrounded by Ireland’s stunning coastal landscapes and potential spottings of wild seals and dolphins along the way. Top off the adventure with a delicious breakfast or beach picnic, and thaw your toes with a trip to the spa. anantara.com
4. The Peligoni Club, Greece
Families seeking a sun-soaked sporty escape should nestle in at Zakynthos’ Peligoni Club, where the Peligoni Olympics will take over the active TARKA kids’ club, followed by indulgent long-table feasts. Throughout the summer season, guests can cycle with world champion Sir Chris Hoy, swim with silver medallist Kerri-anne Payne, race with ultra-runners Nick Butter and Lewis Robling, ride the waves with world champion,Bowien van der Linden, and wakeboard with pro rider Lee Debuse. See the full calendar at peligoni.com
5. Surfing in Cornwall
Thinking of learning to surf? You don’t have to go long-haul to learn some serious skills. Olivia Emily recently caught ‘the stoke’ at PoB Hotels’ marvellous Headland Hotel – but here are some more of our favourite surf schools dotted along our coasts.
6. Oliva Nova, Spain
I went on holiday with my tennis pals and I’m hooked on the fashionable new sport all the cool kids are talking about: Padel. And where better to try a new sport than on the sun-drenched Costa Blanca? Click here to read the rundown.
7. Lucknam Park, Wiltshire
For the horse-curious or well-acquainted, Lucknam Park should top your list. A USP is its equestrian centre, with opportunities for horse riding and other equine experiences on-site, including equine therapy, a type of holistic therapy which involves learning to control horses through your body language. Ellie Smith tried it out on a journey through the south west.
8. The Alps
What’s a holiday in the alps over summer like? Last year, Tessa Dunthorne found out, cycling through the Tiroler Lech nature park and staying at the snow-less yet ultra-glamorous Lech Am Arlberg. Click here to see if she can convince you to try it out for yourself – though keen skiiers, naturally, can embrace the Winter Olympics and visit in the peak season, too.
