What's On 11 May

Dear Reader,
Labelling matters. Otherwise, how are we supposed to navigate our way through to what we want to find out – or be pleasantly surprised to know? Two occurrences spring to mind this week. As I dished out the admittedly not-so-perfect breakfast cereal for my children this weekend, I was thrilled to see M&S’s big label on the back (taking up nearly half the space) that informed me about their sustainability ambitions – bold, bright, simple and with a QR code to find out more. It’s not enough for people to have to guess what you’re up to – you sometimes need to spell it out and be proud (and, I know, there’s greenwash aplenty, but it does give us a chance to support the businesses that are doing things transparently). My second labelling find was on the trees on my street in Acton. They cried out, ‘Hello, will you water me?’ with instructions about how to become a Watering Champion. What a brilliant idea. I duly returned with a watering can. These initiatives do bring a dollop of hope, a sliver of community-action and an empowerment that you are involved in how things could turn out. More labels, please.
Have a great week.

Ocean Calling
David Attenborough is 99 and knows he won’t see ‘how the story ends’, but his new book and film Ocean are a powerful call for us all to engage with how our future plays out – we all have a stake in it. You can see it today in cinemas or it’s coming to Disney later this year. Make sure you see it if you can.
