What's On 6 October

Dear Reader,

Does Michelin do it for you? It certainly is the most highly-regarded accolade that a restaurant can get – especially when they nab three (there are only 146 restaurants worldwide to boast the triple – and nine in the UK). Not content though with spreading stardust among eateries, Michelin is going further with the launch of Keys – a new awards system for hotels. So which of our UK and Irish hotels grabbed a set or two (or three)? An impressive 123 establishments: 72 gaining one, 37 two, and 14 a much-vaunted three. It’s no surprise that these included London stalwarts like Claridge’s, The Connaught and The Savoy, together with rural hotspots like Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons and Lucknam Park (both favourites of mine). Further from London, it was Scotland’s Gleneagles and Adare Manor in the Republic of Ireland to top the charts. Congratulations all round, but I wonder if they’ll also introduce their green star system for hotels too… I hope so.

Michael Gove – The New Spectator Editor

The only time I met Michael Gove was in a tapas restaurant in South Ken. I was three sheets to the wind, and I spied him across the room and stomped over. It was the night before Liz Truss resigned and I almost cried on him over his calamari about the pain and suffering the Conservatives were subjecting us to. He assured me it wouldn't last much longer. He was right (at least about her), of course. His reputation for ruthless decapitations continues as he’s announced as the new editor of The Spectator magazine. Farewell, Fraser…
