What's On 9 March

Dear Reader,

I’ve been writing ‘morning pages’ for the past four days in Marrakech. Borrowed from Julia Cameron’s transformative book The Artist’s Way, which helps us unlock our creativity, this is part of the writing ritual of Silk Road Slippers, a four-day writing masterclass, headed up by three formidable editors/writers. Morning pages are a key to confronting the horror of the blank page and to let your thoughts tumble through the vessel of your pen, finding your flow – much like journaling. My group included traumatised poets, published authors  and first-time novelists – we’ve had to read our work (written in just seven minutes) aloud, including in front of Alan Hollinghurst, a guest author for a day – and get critical feedback. So different from my normal journalism, I’ve been pushed to write with a voice that comes truly from me. It’s been magnificent, exhausting, confronting and challenging, a therapeutic cleansing of a sort – and a glimpse into why tapping into our creativity is a key to really finding out who we are.

Have a great week.

How Does Cortisol Affect Our Sleep?

I label myself a bad sleeper. It’s rare I feel fully sleep-nourished, but it’s been like that for decades and I’ve never got to the bottom of it. Our ‘flight or fight’ hormone, cortisol, may be a key to unlocking some of our sleep mysteries though. Find out more here
