What's On 24 March
Dear Reader,
This week I nearly bought a racehorse. Bear with me, I’m still quite tempted. I blame the persuasive charm of one Hon Harry Herbert, who founded the Highclere Thoroughbred Racing syndicate, which was the first of its kind back in the day and is still the most pre-eminent. It’s not just the horses that have the finest pedigrees, Harry’s father, the 7th Earl of Carnarvon, was the legendary trainer of the Queen’s horses. Better known as ‘Porchey’, he was as they tell us in The Crown, the Queen’s greatest confidante. For a cool £5,000 (minimum), you can dip a toe in the dazzling world of Thoroughbreds, sweat, tears and adrenaline – and share royal boxes with sheiks, royals and captains of industry. Beware though, says Harry, people don’t invest to make money (though he assures me most do), they invest for the passion and the fun. Sounds as good a reason as any.
Have a great week.
